Exercise (Session 7): Creating a Sample Protocol (3.2)

Exercise Objectives

In this exercise, you will:

  1. Create a Sample Protocol in L7|Master.

  2. Add a Protocol Action.

  3. Create a Workflow in L7|Master to test this new Protocol.

Scenario

Once a Donor has been approved for donation, they will have one of the Donation Units (Red Blood Cells, Plasma, or Platelets) collected. These Entities need to created and tracked as part of this process.

Your Task

Part 1: As a Super User, you have been asked to create a Sample Protocol named Sample Collection. This Protocol will be used to create a new Donation Unit Entity for each Donor.

The lab manager has only asked that you add one (1) required field:

  • Unit Barcode should assign a QR code to the new child Entity being created.

    • The value of this field should become the Entity’s barcode.

There are several non-editable fields to the right of the Unit Barcode field you created, where did they come from?

Part 2: Since blood group and Rh factor are not known at this time, the lab manager has asked you to add the tag test pending to each newly created Donation Unit.

  • Create a Protocol Action to automatically apply the tag.

Part 3: Now that you have created the Protocol, you need to test that it works as expected. To do this, you first need to add this Protocol to a Workflow, because Experiments can only be created for Workflows and Workflow Chains. To do this:

  1. Create a Workflow named Unit Collection.

    1. Add the Unit Preparation Protocol from the Protocol Library.

    2. Add your Sample Collection Protocol from the Protocol Library.

  2. Create and submit a new Experiment for this Workflow.

    1. Add one (1) new or existing Donor Entity.

  3. Create and complete a new Worksheet for the Experiment.

Questions:

  1. How do you know if the Donation Unit’s barcode was updated?

  2. How do you know if your Protocol Action worked?
